I am thrilled to offer for sale this legendary unicorn of a motorbike, the Foggy Petronas FP1, with the tail fairing signed by Carl Fogarty himself.
The Story and legend of these machines is worth a read with a lot written about them already, so here is a snippet.
THE FP1 RACE BIKE – Carl Fogarty retired from a vastly successful racing career and with ambitions to run a racing team of similar success, teaming with Petronas and Sauber Engineering of Formula 1 fame, the FP1 superbike was created as an astonishing machine for the age and built to win the World Superbike series.
Power is delivered from a Sauber developed 900cc triple cylinder engine (road bike producing an era topping 127bhp), reversely mounted in the exceptional race chassis to ensure the exhaust was direct to the rear with the least amount of weight. Utilising the best of the era’s engineering, they featured a state of the art chassis, suspension, drivetrain, brakes and suspension.
With these fabulous ingredients sure to make for a race winner, Foggy Petronas Racing (FPR) signed world champion Troy Corser and exception British rider James Haydon, to take their new challenger to the front of the grid. After just a few races there were early signs of the FP1’s serious potential…….. but then the FIM changed regulations to allow 1000cc higher powered engines and gone with it was the prospect of being a race winner.
The FPR team had pushed every aspect of the 900cc FP1 race bike to its’ fullest potential, so the plug was pulled, but not before the team had to manufacture 150 road machines to meet with homologation ruling and this brings us to the road going FP1.
THE FP1 ROAD BIKE – Building with a limited budget, the FP1 road bike is pretty much the race machine with indicators on and those who have ridden the road version agree that it is as close and challenging to ride as any of the early 2000’s World Superbikes as you could imagine.
With the road bikes, it is here the story goes into the stuff of myth and legends, with rumours and speculation as to the truths behind what happened, but safe to say the FP1’s basically disappeared.
That is until more recent years where one or two started to appear with engine and chassis numbers ground off, gearbox parts removed and software corrupted to stop them being used in the public domain. Some of these have since been sold as non-runners and one or two owners have managed to get them running.
THIS BIKE – Lanzante Engineering, highly regarded and renowned for their prowess in the rarified McLaren F1 and Hyper car arena, purchased in secret a small collection of the FP1 road bikes that had been saved from the removal of parts and vital chassis numbers and offered here is one of these bikes.
Firstly, it is important to note that comparison between this Lanzante FP1 with any other is not accurate and to say Lanzante have simply restored the bike is a major understatement.
Lanzante have re-engineered components and seals, using specialist tools made only by Petronas to check all important Cam timings, checked gearboxes and they even have the correct throttle position Magneti Marelli software, which is unique to Lanzante. The list of works is too extensive to show here so please ask for full details.
The bike was taken down to the chassis, engine stripped and gone through, with new fuel injectors and pumps, suspension serviced and where necessary a cosmetic overhaul to name but a few points. All before a road test with a fresh MOT to finally and most importantly, make sure this bike can now be UK road registered (currently remains un-registered).
The crowning glory and I am thrilled to highlight that the bike is now signed on the Carbon Fibre tail fairing by none other than King Foggy himself. His signature is covered with paint protection film and a photo of Carl’s signing along with a certificate of authenticity is supplied with the bike.
